The Real Struggle of Renting a Carpet Cleaning Machine.

You receive a phone call from a family member or friend informing you that they will be visiting you in a couple of days. As you end the conversation and hang up the phone, you look at your dogs laying on the carpet then you realize, oh man, I need to clean these carpets.

An easy and cheap fix would be to rent the carpet cleaning machine that you saw at your local grocery store. You’re thinking, hey it’s cheaper and I can do it myself. Go for it! You confidently head to the grocery store to rent the carpet cleaner. Don’t forget that carpet cleaning solution. You roll the machine to your car. You take a second to figure out where can you fit it in. The trunk? The backseat? After you wiggled, pushed, shoved, and squeezed the machine into your car you realized you scratched your seats, oh well. Then you notice some old smelly water has leaked out of the machine and onto your seats & carpets of your car. Great! Another add-on to your to-do list.

Time to head home, driving carefully as to not make any sudden turns so the machine doesn’t leak any more nasty old smelly water onto your car. Made it home. Woot Woot! Now the real work begins. But first, let’s wiggle, pull, and yank this machine out of your car. Scratches and smelly water don’t bother me as you calmly tell yourself while at the same time cursing at this machine.

It’s finally out. Let’s get this party started. Time to read the directions and mix the cleaning solution. Going Good so far. Now let’s turn on this bad boy. It seems to be working. The carpet solution and water is soaking the carpet. Cool! Now let’s suck it up. You run it over and over that same spot waiting for it to extract the water. You did it like five times but the carpet still seems soaked. Maybe the machine is defective. You repeat the process. Then you realize, it’s going to be a long day. Four hours later, you are done. Mission accomplished.

Is it though? Is it really? The carpets are really damp, the stains did not come out, and it smells like a wet dog. No worries, give it a day and it will dry and smell good. Sorry, that’s not gonna happen. It’s important to note that if the water from your carpet is not fully extracted, it can provide the perfect environment for mildew or mold and not to mention a musty lingering odor. So, the answer to the question, Is it worth renting a carpet cleaning machine and doing the work yourself worth it?

Is it really worth renting vs. hiring a professional? The outcome may damage your carpets which will in turn be an expensive fix. Is it convenient to rent a carpet cleaning machine? Well, considering the labor it takes to transport the machine back and forth, I think not.
